Since the 1950s, photography has been recognized as an art form for its unique expression and narrative. The picture of photography is like a readable text, just like human written records. The picture of photography also has its own unique grammar and vocabulary like an article. The content of the picture composed of the external world is like the vocabulary in an article, and the structure of the picture is like the grammar of the article. These grammars are also called "photographic picture language" or "photographic composition". This independent language is also the basis for photography to be separated from painting. Many times, those beautiful pictures in form are regarded as the "beauty" of photography. In fact, photography is no longer a "record" or a simple "description". In artistic creation, the reason why photography is independent of other art categories is that the unique language form of photography can capture a part of the external real world through the lens, combine the materials in the picture through our choice, and describe these materials with light, so that people can feel our inner perception of the world.——David Lai
The course "Grammar of Photographic Language" taught by Professor David Lai was grandly launched at 5A1 Art Space. It was taught face to face and the content mainly systematically focused on the grammatical composition of photographic images (elements and rules) and the visual psychological effects of photographic images (German Gestalt psychological effects). It combined with contemporary art photography works to help students analyze photos according to theory, and on the basis of the analysis, they can choose the shooting method and the composition of the picture.
